The divinity of Jesus Christ is one of the most debated topics between Christianity and Islam.
Christians believe that Jesus is God, based on biblical evidence from both the Old and New Testaments.
On the other hand, the Quran denies this claim but contains verses that hint at His divine nature.
This article, written by humble self,Sani Michael Omakoji (SMO), is not intended to generate controversy between Christians and Muslim faithful but rather to provide comprehensive biblical and Quranic references to support the truth that Jesus is God.
We shall therefore examine facts from both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, as well as the Quranic account, that support the divinity of Jesus.
1. Old Testament Prophecies of Jesus as God
Before Jesus was born, the Old Testament prophesied about a divine Messiah who would come to save humanity.
a. Isaiah 9:6 The Child Called “Mighty God”
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
This prophecy identifies the Messiah as “Mighty God,” showing that He is divine.
b. Micah 5:2 The Messiah’s Eternal Nature
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.”
This verse reveals that the Messiah is eternal, a characteristic that belongs only to God.
c. Zechariah 12:10 God Himself is Pierced
“And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced.”
God declares that He Himself will be pierced, which was fulfilled in Jesus’ crucifixion.
2. Jesus’ Deity in the New Testament
Jesus did not merely claim to be a prophet—He repeatedly declared His divinity.
a. Jesus Claimed to Be One with God
John 10:30 “I and My Father are one.”
John 14:9 “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.”
The Jews understood these statements as claims to deity and attempted to stone Him (John 10:31-33).
b. Jesus Was Worshiped as God
Matthew 28:9. The disciples worshiped Jesus after His resurrection.
John 20:28 Thomas called Jesus, “My Lord and my God!”
c. Jesus Had Authority Over Life and Death
John 11:25 Jesus declared, “I am the resurrection and the life.”
John 5:21 Jesus said, “For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will.” Only God has the power to give life, and Jesus exercised that power.
d. The Apostles Proclaimed Jesus as God Colossians 2:9 “For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.” Titus 2:13 “Looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.”
3. Quranic References to Jesus’ Divine Nature
Islam denies that Jesus is God (Surah 5:72), yet the Quran contains verses that suggest His unique and divine attributes.
a. Jesus Is Called the “Word of God” and “Spirit from God”
Surah 3:45 “The angels said: O Mary! Indeed, Allah gives you good tidings of a word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary.”
Surah 4:171 “Christ Jesus, the son of Mary, was (nothing more than) a messenger of Allah, and His word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit from Him.”
No other prophet is called the Word of God or Spirit from God, suggesting a divine origin.
b. Jesus Performed Miracles That Only God Can Do
Surah 3:49 Jesus created life by breathing into clay birds, healed the blind, and raised the dead by God’s permission.
Surah 5:110 Jesus gave life to the dead, something no other prophet was recorded doing.
c. Jesus Is Alive While Muhammad Is Dead
Surah 4:158 “But Allah raised him [Jesus] up unto Himself.”
Surah 19:33 Jesus says, “Peace be upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I will be raised to life again.”
Unlike Muhammad, who died and remained dead, Jesus was taken to heaven alive, affirming His uniqueness.
d. Jesus Will Return to Judge the World
Surah 43:61 Jesus is described as a “Sign for the Hour,” referring to the Day of Judgment.
Only God has the authority to judge mankind, yet the Quran affirms that Jesus will return to do so.
Conclusion:
Jesus Is Truly God
Both the Bible and the Quran acknowledge that Jesus possesses divine attributes. The Bible explicitly declares that Jesus is God, and even though the Quran denies this, it describes Jesus in a way that no ordinary prophet can be described. His eternal existence, divine authority, ability to create and give life, and His return to judge the world all point to His deity.
For Christians, believing in Jesus as God is essential to salvation (John 8:24 “Unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”). His divinity is the foundation of the Christian faith and the only hope for eternal life.
