In Nigeria, the rising level of gambling is becoming alarming thus, being concerned with this social menace, Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), the largest television network in Africa gave Nigerians opportunity to give their point of views on its popular programmes titled “Good Morning Nigeria” read the views of Nigerians via its twitter handle @ntagmn
Let us read the reactions of these Nigerians;
According Law Alpha C, ” Government can come to the rescue by avoiding recycling in appointments; establish an effective employment initiatives, resuscitate our dying values and effectively regulate betting firms because it can be said that a gambler is a thief in disguise”
To Chris Simeon, ” It is gambling that metamorphosed into ponzi scheme, yahoo yahoo, intenet fraud and other cyber crimes.
If this is not well checked now, nigeria & other parts of the world may turn into something else”
In his own contributions, Dele Jack Solomon, “Now, many youths are going into online gambling, they bet on football matches via Nairabet and so many other websites that provide this functionality, when you ask them why? They tell no jobs.
Please, government & NGOs should create more job so that youths would not have excuse on gambling”
Similarly, Mallam Shitu says, “Laziness! and Quick riches that have overwhelmed this generation are reasons for this desperation via gambling”
Jones Ferrari who emphasized his point in capital letter says, “WHEN THE MINIMUM WAGE CANNOT BE IMPLEMENTED AND WE HAVE A LABOUR MINISTRY THAT IS PLAYING GIMMICKS & STROKES WITH THEIR EMULUMENTS AS IN WAGES,WHAT DO YOU EXPECT? THE PEOPLE WOULD GAMBLE WITH ANY AVAILABLE MEANS TO BRING FOOD TO THEIR TABLES.THE GAMBLER KNOWS WHEN TO HOLD ON”.
Brainy Quest, on the other hand talk on the side effect of gambling which he puts; “Gambling makes people not to think on what will help them.
You can’t even have time to make developmental researches because you devoted you whole time forecasting and following matches based on anxiety.
The school students don’t read much any longer because of gambling.
Government must rise to this menace before we are doomed.
Furthermore, Mr Princewill says, “It is near impossible to stop gambling because all the palliative measures that the government promised from 2015 -2019 have not been fulfilled.
The Social intervention programs only affects about 5% of Nigerians. The remaining 95% of the masses are hustling to survive in whatever way they can hence stopping gambling is another way of creating more hardship and unemployment for Nigerians.
Though, the views of those who contributed to the program did not represent the overall views of Nigerians however, on the average, the contributors agreed that unemployment is the reason for the rise of this menace.
