In a landmark decision, the Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a ruling that has sent shockwaves through Kogi State.
Justice J.K. Omotosho, in a judgment delivered on October 15, 2023, has declared Friday Makama, the Chairman of the special Task Force on Gun Control, wanted for his alleged involvement in kidnapping and intimidation of individuals not loyal to the All Progressieve Congress (APC) party in Kogi State.
This judgment comes as a result of a legal battle initiated by Hon. Ahmadu Danjuma, a Party Chieftain of the Social Democratic Party, who questioned the authority of Governor Yahaya Bello to establish such a task force and make appointments related to firearms control.
The court, in its verdict, determined that Governor Bello did not possess the constitutional powers to form the task force or appoint Mr. Friday Makama as its Director-General.
Furthermore, the court ordered the Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) to invite, investigate, and interrogate Mr. Friday Sani Makama and all individuals associated with him to facilitate the recovery and retrieval of all firearms believed to be in their possession.
This ruling underscores the importance of upholding the rule of law and the division of powers between state and federal authorities, and it has significant implications for the political landscape in Kogi State as the Governorship Election scheduled for November 11, 2023, approaches.
Meanwhile, there is speculation since the order was given that Hon Friday Makama has jetted out of the country to unknown destination.
