It was a black Saturday being 2nd March 2024 for Nigerians and Lovers of comedy movie around the world as popular Nollywood Actor, John Ikechukwu Okafor aka “Mr Ibu” passed on after a protracted illness.

It is in the light of this unfortunate development that OurWorldGist’s dependable Writer, Sani Michael Omakoji, takes a look at “life and time of the deseased”.

Sani Michael Omakoji Writes:

” Born on October 17, 1961, John Ikechukwu Okafor, fondly known as “Mr. Ibu,” hailed from Umunekwu village in Nkanu West L.G.A., Enugu State, Nigeria.

Despite facing educational challenges after elementary school, he displayed resilience and determination. Following his father’s demise in 1974, Okafor relocated to Sapele to live with his elder brother.

In the pursuit of education and supporting his family, he engaged in various menial jobs.

Despite financial constraints, Okafor’s determination led him to explore different avenues.

From hairstyling to photography and even working in a crate-producing company, he exhibited a relentless pursuit of success.

Although he encountered setbacks, he managed to enroll in the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, after secondary school.

Okafor’s journey in Nollywood was nothing short of remarkable.

With a career spanning over 200 films, including iconic titles like “Mr. Ibu” and “Mr. Ibu in London,” he carved a niche for himself in the industry.

His comedic prowess and unique style endeared him to audiences, earning him the moniker “Nigeria’s Borat.”

In addition to his acting career, Okafor briefly delved into music, releasing songs like “This Girl” and “Do You Know.”

However, he was not without controversy, particularly regarding his views on homosexuality in Nollywood, which he likened to a virus.

In October 2023, Okafor revealed his battle with a debilitating ailment that threatened his life and necessitated a leg amputation.

He seeked for financial assistance and prayers from the public, notwithstanding, his health continued to deteriorate.

Tragically, on November 2, 2024, John Ikechukwu Okafor passed away at the age of 62 due to cardiac arrest, marking the end of an era in Nollywood.

His legacy as a comedic genius and cultural icon lives on, leaving behind a void that will be deeply felt by fans, friends, and the Nigerian entertainment industry.

On behalf of Ourworldgist’s management staff, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Nigerian community, the family of Late Mr. Ibu, and his friends. May they find solace and strength during this difficult time.
