Local Government Areas in Nigeria, which are supposed to be development centers for the grassroots, have become looting hubs for most state governors.

This is because these governors control the affairs of the Local Government Areas instead of granting them autonomy to operate.

Against this background, a social commentator who also doubles as a politician, Austin Usman Okai CCa, writes on what he titles: Reviving Local Governance: A Path to Nigeria’s Progress.

Let’s read his piece:
“Nigeria’s development has been hindered by the weakening of local government systems, and it’s time to reclaim the autonomy and effectiveness of these crucial grassroots institutions.

Figures like Governor Yahaya Bello have unfortunately contributed to this decline, but we can reverse the damage by introducing local government (LG) autonomy and conducting LG elections through INEC.

This move has the potential to unlock Nigeria’s full potential and create a brighter future for all.

When local governments are empowered, they can address community-specific issues, drive development, and foster democracy.

They are closest to the people and understand their needs best. Effective local governance can lead to improved basic amenities, infrastructure, and social services. It can also promote accountability, transparency, and participation in governance.

Unfortunately, local governments in Nigeria have been subjected to undue interference, manipulation, and neglect.

State governors have consistently encroached on their autonomy, hijacking their funds and responsibilities.

This has resulted in a lack of development, poor service delivery, and widespread discontent.

To revitalize local governance, we must introduce LG autonomy and conduct LG elections through INEC.

This will ensure that local governments are free from undue interference and can function optimally. INEC’s involvement will guarantee credible and transparent elections, reflecting the will of the people.

We must, as citizens, ensure that local governments receive adequate funding and resources to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

This can be achieved by allocating a significant portion of the national budget to local governments and ensuring that funds are utilized judiciously.

Local governance is crucial for Nigeria’s progress.

By introducing LG autonomy and conducting LG elections through INEC, we can unlock the potential of our grassroots institutions and create a brighter future for all.

Let’s embrace this move and work towards building a more prosperous and democratic Nigeria”.
