In a recent development,Comrade Usman Austin Okai, a prominent activist and one time candidate of the House of Representative for Dekina/Bassa Federal Constituency, has lauded the Kogi State government’s decisive actions against illegal mining in Ankpa , Kogi East
However, he has raised concerns about potential illicit activities and extortion by the miners.
On December 19, 2023, Comrade Okai acknowledged the Kogi State government’s commendable move to curb illegal mining operations in Akpa community, noting that the government’s task force had already seized more than 50 trucks used by these unauthorized miners to exploit the state’s resources.
While expressing appreciation for these initial efforts, Comrade Okai emphasized the need for the state government to go beyond mere confiscation of equipment.
He brought attention to the disturbing trend of illegal miners forging signatures of traditional rulers to gain access to the Ministry of Solid Minerals Resources, likening the battle against illegal mining to a fight against banditry.
Cautioning against potential extortion, Comrade Okai urged the task force leadership to view their responsibilities as a call to duty rather than an opportunity for financial gain.
He stressed the importance of thorough investigations to unveil the networks facilitating illegal activities and ensure that justice is served.
Comrade Okai highlighted the necessity for the state government to compel legal miners to fulfill their corporate responsibilities toward host communities.
Many of these communities, he noted, lack basic amenities such as drinking water and motorable roads, with heavy mining trucks causing destruction.
Schools have reportedly been converted into truck parking garages, and farmland is being adversely affected, impacting the local population’s livelihoods.
In conclusion, Comrade Okai commended the state government’s efforts against illegal mining but urged all involved parties to carry out their duties impartially and in accordance with the law.
He emphasized that such collective actions would safeguard the state’s resources, ensure justice for affected communities, and foster sustainable development in the region.
