The public has been urged to renew its collective commitment to supporting individuals and families living with sickle cell disease.

The Kogi State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Aridaojo Monday Anyebe, made the call during the 2026 World Sickle Cell Day celebration organized by the Hope at Dawn Foundation at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Lokoja.

Speaking as the Guest of Honour at the event, the Commissioner described World Sickle Cell Day as an important occasion for raising awareness, promoting understanding, encouraging early intervention, and strengthening support systems for people living with sickle cell disease.

Hon. Anyebe, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Momoh Steven Azeez, called on stakeholders to intensify advocacy efforts aimed at increasing public awareness and education about sickle cell disease across communities.

He strongly condemned discrimination and stigmatization of persons living with sickle cell disease, urging members of the public to embrace, support, and care for them rather than subject them to prejudice.

The Commissioner emphasized the importance of genotype screening in helping individuals make informed health decisions and stressed the need for improved access to quality healthcare services for those affected by the condition.

He also commended the founder of the Hope at Dawn Foundation, Miss. Ajefu Catherine, for her passion and dedication to improving the lives of people living with sickle cell disease in Kogi State and beyond.

He assured her of the Ministry’s continued partnership and support for the Foundation’s humanitarian initiatives.

In her remarks, the founder of the Hope at Dawn Foundation, Miss. Ajefu Catherine, stated that beyond sickle cell advocacy, the organization remains committed to supporting vulnerable children in their educational pursuits.

She explained that her vision is to see communities equipped with accessible healthcare facilities capable of providing free medications, blood transfusions, and quality treatment for individuals living with sickle cell disease.

She therefore called on government agencies, development partners, and well-meaning individuals to support the Foundation’s efforts.

The event formed part of activities marking the 2026 World Sickle Cell Day and served as a platform for raising awareness, promoting inclusion, and advocating for improved healthcare services for persons living with sickle cell disease.
